Online Safety Tips for Parents :)

Just like in the real world, your child's online experiences are better when you're aware, curious, and engaged.

Be Aware :)

  • Install filters to protect your child from inappropriate websites.
  • Keep tabs on your child’s internet use. Make sure you know what sites your child visits, how much time he or she spends on them, and whom your child is communicating with.

Be Curious :)

  • Set limits for screen time to have a balance with real world connections.
  • Put the family computer in a public place in your home, such as a kitchen or family room, to encourage an open dialogue and discourage unwanted online behavior.
  • Consider not allowing your child to have any connected devices, such as a smartphone, laptop computer, or tablet, in private areas of your home, like a bedroom or bathroom.

Be Engaged :)

  • Keep the conversation going. Start talking with your child at an early age about online use and continue the dialogue as your child gets older.
  • Know any passwords that your child uses, and explain that they shouldn’t be shared with friends.

The Puppy Picture

Before school, Rosie posted a picture of her puppy on the internet. After school, she went online right away to check it. How exciting! Ten people had left comments on her picture! Most of the messages were funny. But one person wrote, “Your dog is ugly, just like you.” Rosie didn’t know who wrote it. The comment was anonymous. Rosie was upset and told her mom. Her mom told her the message was cyberbullying—bullying that takes place online. Rosie realized that such mean comments can really hurt people’s feelings. “After this, I will only say nice things online!” Rosie promised. “And I’ll make sure all my friends do too!”

A Suspicious Game

Playing games on the internet was one of Jake’s favorite things to do. Every day after school, he and his brother Connor would borrow their dad’s laptop and play their favorite online game. One day, a friend sent them a link to a new game. Connor and Jake were thrilled and excitedly clicked on the link but a moment later a message popped up, prompting them to download a file in order to play. Connor leaned in to click when Jake said, “Hang on!” Connor looked up to see Jake shaking his head thoughtfully. “If it’s a virus, it could ruin the computer and really mess things up for Mom and Dad.” Connor jumped up and raced off, calling back over his shoulder, “You’re right. I’m getting Dad!”

Too Good to Be True?

Stephanie looked closely at her research assignment for the first time. She read, “Seventy percent of Earth is covered with water but what lies beneath the oceans is largely unknown. Explain why ocean exploration is difficult.” Stephanie found a website with a lot of interesting information but she wasn’t sure if she could trust it. She looked closer and realized that she couldn’t tell who had created the site and many of the words were spelled wrong. Moreover, the site included a lot of opinions. Stephanie decided to look for a more credible source and found a government website that had the facts she needed, and it even explained where each fact came from. In addition, the site had a question form she could use to get more information!

Student Worksheet 2 Reading Questions

Read the three stories on Worksheet 1. Then answer these questions.

The Puppy Picture
1. Someone made a comment on Rosie’s picture that upset her. What was it?
2. Did Rosie know who made the comment that hurt her feelings?
3. What are two good things that Rosie did after she read the online comment?

A Suspicious Game
1. What are the three main events in this story?
2. What was the reason Jake didn’t want to download the file?
3. What empowering action did Connor take after listening to Jake?

Too Good to Be True?
1. Why was Stephanie doing online research?
2. What three clues made Stephanie think that the first website she found might not be a credible source?
3. What three clues made Stephanie think that the second website was a more credible source?

Class Project Spread the Word

Objective: To empower students to share their knowledge of internet safety with others

This program was designed to help your students learn about the importance of using the internet safely. After completing these lessons, your students should feel empowered in their understanding of how to:

• keep their private information safe and secure
• think before they post anything on the internet
• treat people kindly on the web
• respond when they see information online that makes them uncomfortable
• protect themselves from online threats such as viruses and strangers

Now, ask your students to share what they've learned about these topics with others. This project will help your class develop an exciting public service announcement (PSA) campaign to educate and engage the students and adults in your school.

Get Started:

1. Explain to the class that together they will be creating a PSA campaign that will raise awareness about internet safety and cyberbullying. You may choose to focus on both of these areas, or to concentrate on just one.

2. As a class, discuss which audience you hope to reach. Do you want to target older students? Younger students? Teachers? Families? All of the above?

3. List various ways to reach your target audience(s). Some examples include: family information nights, video messages, plays or skits, posters, flyers, school assemblies, or "radio" broadcasts over the school's public-address system. (Your class may come up with other ideas as well.) Select several ideas to pursue as components of your campaign.

Create the Campaign:

1. Brainstorm ideas for a campaign slogan. (Examples include: "Smart Surfing," "The Tangled Web," and "Internet Intelligence.") List all of the suggested ideas. Take a class vote to choose the slogan for your target message.

2. Divide the class into groups. Each group will take charge of one aspect of the campaign. One group might create posters and flyers, for example, while another may write and rehearse a script for a skit to present to other classes.

3. Arrange for students to share their campaign with other students in the school, as well as any other target audiences such as families.

Wrap-up:

1. Ask: Do you think the campaign was a success? Why or why not? Which part of the campaign was most effective?

2. Ask: What did you learn from this campaign? Has the campaign made you change your own behavior when using the internet? How so?

Certificate of Completion :)

I,_____, have completed this program and pledge to:

BE COOL I will be respectful to others online and not post anything that could be hurtful to someone else.

BE HEARD If I see anything online that worries me, I will speak up and tell a parent or trusted adult.

BE SAFE I will protect my personal information online and will not share private personal details, like where I live or go to school.

Hang this certificate near your home computer to remember to be a responsible, careful, and safe digital citizen!

Family Tip Sheet :) Family Reproducible - Families: Talk about online safety at home!

Between texting, chats, games, and social media, staying on top of your family’s digital safety can feel overwhelming. But empowering your children with information can help them stay safe online. Here are some things that might work for your family:

• Set limits for screen time. Install filters to protect your child from inappropriate websites.
• Keep tabs on your child’s internet use. Make sure you know what sites your child visits, how much time he or she spends on them, and whom your child is communicating with.
• Keep the conversation going. Stay involved as your child gets older and starts using the internet in new ways.
• Know any passwords that your child uses, and explain that they shouldn’t be shared with friends.
• Safety in numbers. Put the family computer in a public place so that being online becomes a group experience.
• Consider not allowing your child to have any connected devices, such as a smartphone, laptop computer, or tablet, in private areas of your home, like a bedroom or bathroom.

The internet is an amazing resource— when you use it wisely. Cut out and post this pledge near your family computer to remind everyone to surf safely!

Club Penguin’s Coins For Change 2013 Result :)

The Coins for Change 2013 page has been updated: Change the World with Club Penguin!

This holiday, we changed the world and had fun doing it. Millions of players joined Club Penguin for the seventh annual Coins For Change. Every penguin who took part made a difference! From December 19 - January 1, players logged in to Club Penguin, played online games, and donated 25 billion virtual coins to help real world projects and charities around the globe. Because of our players' overwhelming support, ten projects will share a $1M donation that will provide medical help, build safe places, and protect the earth. Real world projects range from constructing school libraries and a hospital wing, to protecting the nesting grounds of penguins and migratory routes of snow leopards. In the spirit of giving, players also pledged to donate 10,985 toys to children less fortunate than themselves. Thanks for making this year successful. Together, we're changing the world!

UK Club Penguin Brighton office News :)

This is a message by Daffodaily5:

Hiya! Do you sometimes wonder what happens in the UK Club Penguin office in Brighton? As well as working super hard looking after Club Penguin, we also do other stuff to help make the world a better place! So I thought it would be a brill idea to share some of the cool things that the UK team's been up to recently!

Love In A Box
Each year, when the festive season is approaching, the whole team goes on an outing to purchase lots of small gifts and supplies, which we then put in empty shoe boxes and send out to deprived children in Europe. This year’s event was a huge success as we filled and wrapped 53 boxes!! Everybody had such a brill time knowing we were donating to such a worthy cause. You can see my box below!

Donating Blood
5 brave members of the team did a very honourable deed last week and donated blood! I went too, even though I don’t like needles (I hope you're proud of me)! It was totally worth it though, because as well as us potentially saving a person’s life, they gave us tea and BISCUITS afterwards! :D

Preparing for Christmas
Tree? CHECK! Decorations? CHECK! A giant fake snow machine??? I wish! ;)  To get us all in the seasonal sprit, the whole team gathered to decorate the office in twinkling lights, tinsel and other sparkly things! Not long till Christmas now, right?

That’s all for this month’s UK news, I hope you enjoyed it! I'll do another update next month. :) Byeee!

…Thanks for the update Daffo and THANKS for helping and caring for others :) I’m sure your gift box for a girl will make someone very HAPPY :)

Socktober - Kid President Guest Blogger at Club Penguin

This is a message by Kid President:

To all my Club Penguin friends! I’m Kid President. I like to dance. I want to help make the world more awesome. You might have seen my videos online or maybe even watched them in school. I’m writing because I love Club Penguin! You guys know how to make cool things happen. I’m declaring the month SOCKTOBER! and I need your help.

What if we got 1 million people to help the homeless? Every night there are nearly 600,000 people who have to sleep on the streets in our country and it’s about to get really cold. That’s not okay! We can help them. See if you and your family can work together to collect new socks and other simple everyday things your homeless neighbors might need. Collect them all by October 31 and deliver them to the local shelter in your town. Kids all over the world are getting involved! Can’t collect socks? We’re also working to raise money to help our friend Aaron build a safe place for women and kids who are homeless in Little Rock, Arkansas. We want to show the world what awesome looks like! If you and your family decide to help out with SOCKTOBER, we want to know! Have your parents email a photo of your donation to socktober@soulpancake.com, along with your penguin name. I'll send a list of the penguins who donated to the Club Penguin Team, and they'll give you a special rare item for donating: the Green Bunny Slippers! How awesome is that? There’s lots of people I could ask for help, but can’t think of a better group than my friends at Club Penguin. Let’s make this the best Socktober ever! Together we can give the world a reason to dance! -Kid President

…I’m HAPPY to donate Socks :) I have 2 brand new pairs that are very warm and when I asked Mum she said that I could donate them so I will :) BUT due to INTERNET SAFETY she DOESN'T allow me to send a picture of myself along with my Penguin name! HAPPY SOCKTOBER :)

Helping to Save the Ocean :)

Today Sweet and I have dived into the deep blue Ocean that surrounds Club Penguin Island to clean up the Soda Seas and to study all the Sea Monsters that live down there :) OH NO! This doesn't look good at all BUT if we work TOGETHER we will soon have the leaking Cream Soda Barrels removed!

…DONE :) There are so many interesting animals living down here :) We had so much FUN playing TOGETHER with the Blowfishes trying to make the Funniest Face :) We all laughed so hard at the Funny Faces we made and then Sweet accidently swam right into a Blowfish mouth and the shocked Blowfish made the Silliest Face ever right before it spitted Sweet out…LOL :)

…Sweet LOVES to swim around and she dives and does a water dance :) Sorry BIG Fish! Sweet didn't meant to scare you! Please be still and I will do my best to steer the Aqua Grabber so it doesn't  bump into you…

…It’s so nice to see how clear the Sea is and how well the seaweed and corals have recovered after we cleaned up the Spill :) Wait for me Sweet the Amethysts we found is so heavy that the Agua Grabber gets slow…LOL :)

…THANKS for a FUN day Sweet :) Let’s take the Amethysts to Uncle Gary I know he would like to use it for his latest Experiment :)
