The Club Penguin team is proud to present the first preview of "New Horizons", a documentary on the history of CP. We started working on this documentary back in June 2012, and we're excited to finally share a portion of it with you to celebrate Club Penguin's 7th anniversary.

UPDATE: October 29, 2012 Screenhog has added info about the Video :)

So awesome. Now for my commentary!

0:01 This is Club Penguin’s hometown of Kelowna, BC.
0:04 “New Horizons” is about the perfect name for a Club Penguin documentary. Club Penguin was originally created by New Horizon Interactive, and when we made Club Penguin, we had to make our own rules about how our virtual world would work, because so few had been made before ours.
0:11 There’s Lane (Billybob). If you look closely on the shelf behind him, there is the super rare plush of the golden Viking Helmet penguin.
0:16 There’s Holly (Happy77). In the original New Horizon Interactive office, Holly and I worked on the first issues of The Penguin Times together.
0:20 There’s me (Screenhog). That room, in my opinion, is the coolest room in the Club Penguin offices. Every time I visit CP, I make a point to check out that room again.
0:27 Nickname1 was the first penguin Lance created for testing Club Penguin. Swampy was also Lance’s penguin.
0:30 There’s Lance (Rsnail). The framed picture is the original Far Side comic that inspired him to use penguins in his chat.
0:34 “massive multiplayer snowball war game” – this would have been called Snow Blasters. I still would love to see how that game would have turned out.
0:41 This was from my first attempt to create an animation model sheet for the penguins. It was not nearly detailed enough, and resulted in the penguins looking very different from one another for the first two years.
0:43 My first possible designs of the Tour Guide Hat (clothing ID# 428). After drawing these up, it was decided not to use the actual word “TOUR” since we were considering taking Club Penguin to other languages, and the question mark hat was used instead. (In Club Penguin, when a tour guide holds up a sign, it’s translated into the proper language).
0:45 I sketched these, but I can’t quite remember why. It might have been for an early Card-Jitsu prototype.
0:48 Here’s Dave. He funded the Club Penguin prototype, and was the third co-founder. Ironically, I don’t think he ever created a penguin on CP.
0:59 This was taken from the SWF file of the original www.newhorizoninteractive.com. I always liked that site design. New Horizon Interactive’s main job until 2005 was video editing and webpage creation. (Side note: There was a company based in the USA somewhere called www.newhorizon.com that also did some kind of web applications. After Club Penguin launched, they actually had to put a disclaimer on their homepage saying that they were not the New Horizon that makes Club Penguin. I feel so sorry for the amount of e-mails they must have received every day asking for a beta hat.)

1:09 The art here appears to be taken from my storyboard drawings for the first Card-Jitsu power card animations. The Ninja is from the Ninja power card, and the faint sketches behind appear to be from the Puffle Roundup card.
1:20 See that construction crane and those girders behind the fence? That was the only art I made specifically for Penguin Chat 3.
1:25 The original Snow Trekker (called the Snow Cat in Penguin Chat 3, renamed in Club Penguin for legal reasons). I think there’s a tiny version of it in a bottle in the Lighthouse.
1:49 “Items and places and minigames”. Penguin Chat 3 had no items (besides the ninja outfit, and briefly, the hard hat). It had no minigames. The Gift Shop existed so that you could buy actual, real T-Shirts and get them sent to you (but hardly anyone did).

2:00 That sketch of the party hat penguin was drawn by the second artist hired for Club Penguin. The song is “I’ve Been Delayed”, which played in the Night Club of Penguin Chat 3.
2:07 The first, hastily-created Club Penguin homepage.
2:28 The Beta Test party was a genuinely exciting day for us, if for no other reason than for the fact that the servers didn’t die. That was a big concern for us, but we had over 150 penguins on at one time, and for us, that was HUGE!!! (Fun fact: the original world we used for doing a beta test is now one of the safe chat servers.)
2:34 You know why they keep showing the same room over and over? Because it was the only one decorated. That was the entire Beta Test party. Ah, how times have changed.
2:50 My personal prediction of how big Club Penguin would get was demolished about 8 months after we launched.
2:57 This photo appeared on the front page of a Canadian newspaper, and was the very first appearance of a red puffle (see the bottom left).

3:01 Gin was the original “voice” of Aunt Arctic for the Penguin Times.
3:06 I’m not going to even try to point out details inside the pictures of the Club Penguin offices… I’m sure there are many. The important part is to notice the people. Club Penguin is still being run by an amazing team.
3:16 This was taken from this year’s Anniversary party. Rsnail, Gizmo and I were invited to the office to be special guests for the party. (I can only access my Screenhog penguin from within CP offices, so before you ask, no, I can’t meet you online. It’s locked for a reason.)
3:21 Looks like someone was playing too much New Super Mario Bros 2!
3:26 Man, Club Penguin has some awesome fan art.
3:39 Chris Heatherly, who’s taking over for Lane. EDIT: According to the Club Penguin blog, his penguin name is “Spike Hike”.
3:54 Say what you will, but I really like the room redesigns. They are slick. After seven years of growth, Club Penguin’s needed some changes to reflect the new features and games.

That’s it! I’ve heard rumors of a longer documentary coming… I hope they’re true.

Puffle History by Screenhog Part 2 :)

This is a message from Screenhog:

Hi everyone! Screenhog here, with part two of puffle origins. This time, let's talk about the purple, red, and yellow puffles.

In 2006, the purple puffle was the fifth puffle type to be discovered. The first penguin known to have a purple puffle was Aunt Arctic, but one day, she lost it. She turned to the Penguin Secret Agency for help, and the purple puffle was found. Soon after, other purple puffles populated the Pet Shop. (Say that three times fast.) Mission 1 case of the Missing Puffles CHEATS :)

The red puffle came soon after, and was brought by Rockhopper as a special Christmas gift. Red puffles are native to Rockhopper Island, and only arrived on Club Penguin after hitching a ride on Rockhopper's ship!

The next puffle was the yellow puffle in November 2007. Yellow puffles, who love anything artistic, kept themselves hidden for years. But when penguins started to build a Stage, they were too curious to stay away any longer. My Yellow Puffle Sunshine ANIMATED :)

That's all for now! Next time, it's the stories of the last three puffle colors!

By Screenhog

Thanks Screenhog for this waddle down Memory Lane :) I remember the First time I saw a Yellow Puffle it was during the Halloween Party 2007 at the Ski Hill and I was both Surprised and  EXCITED :)

…Then I saw a Yellow Puffle Hiding in the Forest :)

…The Stage was still under Construction…

…sometimes we could see a Yellow Puffle at the Roof :)

…And when we Opened The Stage the Yellow Puffle named Shakespeare had moved in there :)

…This is the First Picture of my Yellow Puffle Sunshine I adopted her November 30, 2007 :)

…Later on March 21, 2009 Shakespeare decided to live with us too :)

Puffle History by Screenhog :)

This is a message from Screenhog:

Hi everyone, Screenhog here with a fun bit of info about Club Penguin's history!

Last month, a penguin named Gwen78 said that she wanted to hear the history of where the puffles came from. Well, I have no idea where they originally came from, but I can tell you how they were all discovered on Club Penguin!

You see, it used to be that penguins thought that they were the only creatures that lived on the island... until something strange began to happen. Furry creatures began popping up all over the place:

It turned out that Club Penguin was full of these furry creatures, and there were four colors; blue, pink, green, and black. After determining that the creatures were safe, the penguins of the island named them "puffles". Penguins loved the puffles, and wanted to take care of them, so a Pet Shop was built.

Most of the puffles really enjoyed the opportunity to be adopted by penguins, but the green puffle in the Night Club loved his spot so much that he stayed there. So, next time you're in the Night Club, say hi to one of the oldest puffles in Club Penguin.

But wait, you say... how were the other puffles discovered? Well, let's save that bit of history for another day. Waddle on!

Halloween Igloo Contest by Screenhog :)

This is a message from Screenhog:

Hello Penguins, Screenhog here.

As you may have heard, there's a new Halloween Igloo Contest coming up next weekend. I saw some great decorating suggestions from you guys on Wednesday. I'm looking forward to seeing some of them.

One of the things that will come in handy for this year's contest is that now your igloos are stored like items. It used to be that when you bought a new igloo, you'd lose your old one. But last month we added a feature where igloos get added to your inventory instead. Check it out:

Well, my igloo's ready for the contest! Give it a try, and don't miss your chance to enter the contest next weekend. If you've got any other igloo tips, let me know in the comments.

Have a good one... and waddle on!

Puffle Rescue Tips by Screenhog :)

Hi everyone, Screenhog here!

By now many of you have probably tried out the new Puffle Rescue game in the Mine. If you haven't, I definitely suggest heading down and trying it out. It's a lot of fun and very different from other Club Penguin games.

For everyone who's trying to get the hang of the game, I thought I'd post some suggestions and tips that have worked for me so far.

1. Look before you leap... or swim.

It helps to look ahead and plan your jumps. Remember that while you only have a little time to act, looking ahead and waiting for the best chance works well.

2. Sometimes 'close' is close enough.

If you mistime your jump, or if you need to make a fast leap, you can still land safely even if your aim isn't perfect. You'll grab onto moving platforms automatically if you're close enough...

Puffle Rescue :)3. Watch for new challenges.

At first, each level you reach will introduce a new challenge. Be cautious - there are tons of break-away platforms and ice chunks, along with sharks, bumpers, cannons and more. Pay close attention until you master all of them...

Puffle Rescue :)4. Last but not least, a few hidden tricks...

Have you tried standing on the mine carts until they leave the screen yet? Try it out! And if it gets too dark for you in the mine levels, remember that standing on the black and white check points will give you more light.

Do you guys have any other suggestions? If you can spare a moment from rescuing, I'd love to hear any tips you may have in the comments.

Otherwise, I hope you enjoy the new game.

Waddle on!

Club Penguin Ice Garden - Jardin de glace Club Penguin :)

Under the direction of Michel Lepire, twelve sculptors created a unique garden of ice-sculpture dreams at the Carnaval de Québec.

In the Club Penguin Ice Garden fantasy world there were dance floor lights specially designed for the occasion. WOW! This Igloo Party took place between January 29 to February 14, 2010 and it must have been AWESOME! I so Much Wished I could have been there!

Today we got this Message from Screenhog:

Lots of you voted a few weeks ago on a penguin to be carved from ice for the Carnaval de Quebec. As you know, The Rocker penguin won! And here's what it looked like...

Screenhog on Puffle Design :)

This is a message from Screenhog:

Hi everyone, it's Screenhog!
It's the time of year when we honor the island's best pets - puffles. Way back when Club Penguin first launched, there weren't any puffles at all. But a lot of you asked to have some kind of pet to adopt and we decided to make up a completely new creature. That's how the puffle came to be. Actually, you guys even decided on the name "puffle"!
Last year we showed a couple of the original sketches back from November 2005 when artists first started sketching what a penguin's pet might look like - we wanted to show some of those again (in case you missed them) plus a few more that have never been seen before.
Puffle sketches :)
What do you think?
Hey, if you had the chance to design a make-believe pet, what would it be like?

Penguins can’t Fly…OR?

One thing I Really Like about Club Penguin is the small hidden Messages we can find here is one :) Look at the Lower Left Corner of This Picture and you see Two Penguins in front of their Computers…

Club Penguin Log in Picture…Have you noticed The Message on the computer screens? The Right Red Penguins with a Construction Helmet on His screen shows a Blue Penguin…Cool :)

On The Computer screen that belongs to the Left Blue Penguin in a Red Viking Hat you can see a code:

if (penguin) {
  cantFly = true;
}

This is probably the computer language ActionScript that The Club Penguin Programmers use to program Club Penguin :)

Translated It basically means that penguins can’t fly!rsnail and Screenhoog :)

…On top of the computer screen you can also see a snail with a rocket on…”Rocket Snail”… so the Blue Penguin is rsnail :) The Red Penguin has on his desk a PINK pig with a screen on the side so he must be Screenhog :) Back to the Topic :) Can Penguins Flies? BBC News have Proofs that Penguins CAN FLY! Look at this Amazing and High Flying Video :)

…LOL…and here is How this Flying Penguins April Fool Video was Made :)

…Thanks BBC for this FUN and cute Video :) So can Penguin fly? YES! In Club Penguin we can :) Put on your Flyer cap or Jet Pack or BOTH...LOL…click on D or start Dancing and Eureka! A Flying Penguin! Penguins can FLY :)

Screenhog on how to Play Card-Jitsu Fire

This is a message from Screenhog:

Hello Penguins! Screenhog here.

Lots of you are already Card-Jitsu Fire experts! But I wanted to give you some game info in case you haven't had a chance to play the new game in the Fire Dojo yet:

General Stuff:

  • There are practice mats for 2, 3, and 4 players. You can play with friends there.
  • If you talk to Sensei, and you pick the "Earn your Fire Suit" option, he'll set up a match. You get more experience points if you do this.
  • You can enter new offline trading card codes and you'll get cards added to your online deck. You won't see the animations in the Card-Jitsu Fire game but you can see them if you're playing the original Card-Jitsu game.

How to Play:

  • On your turn, select the stone which determines the spaces you move, choose your tile (you have 2 options), and then you'll pick your card to determine the outcome of the round.
  • If you land on one of these, - choose a card. The highest number wins. If you don't have the element, you cannot win that round.
  • If you end up with this symbol, or if you land on the same space as an opponent, you're going to have a Card-Jitsu battle - the elements determine the winner (water beats fire, etc. as in the original Card-Jitsu).
  • If you end up on this symbol, you get to choose which of the 3 elements you'd like to play!
  • If you're playing and someone quits, you get the experience points. If you quit, you don't get any points.

With all this exciting fire stuff, don't forget the important element of snow... The Great Snow Maze and snowy sport celebrations start Friday at the Ski Village.

Card-Jitsu Fire Game        NINJA AMULET Key to New NINJA Journey in Club Penguin :)

Screenhog talks Card-Jitsu Fire :)

This is a message from Screenhog:

Hi everyone! It's Screenhog again.
If you haven't been there yet, you might want to check out the construction for the Card-Jitsu Fire game. It's our newest multiplayer game and it'll launch November 24th! Card-Jitsu FIRE Game starts November 24, 2009 :)
You might not know, but multiplayer games are pretty complicated to make. Only one other game in Club Penguin supports 4 players - Sled Racing. Up to 4 ninjas will be able to play together in Card-Jitsu Fire and the team's been working really, really hard to get it ready. Since the new game starts next week, I wanted to try and cover a few things you've asked about:
· Card-Jitsu Fire isn't just about new cards. It's a whole new way of using all your cards in a Fire Ninja setting.
· You'll be using the cards you have already collected. But it's not just Fire cards - you'll be able to master the element of fire but you'll have to use all the elements to do so.

Card-Jitsu Fire Game
If you've got questions, please ask in the comments and I'll try to answer as many as I can. And remember, you've got to be a ninja and get the Amulet to play!
