Blog Action Day 2009 Climate Change – What have you done Sensei?

Today I meet Sensei at The Dojo Courtyard I had something I wanted to talk to him about! First I and Sensei Bows then I said I have urgent things to talk to you about! I know now for fact that When you awakened the Volcano you disturbed our environment do you know how fragile our earth are? Sensei looked at the Volcano and said I Listen Grasshopper…

…I have talked to Gary and TOGETHER we have done some Research… Do you know Sensei I said that The earth kind of works like a Greenhouse :) Rays from the sun come and enter Earth’s thin atmosphere. The rays get absorbed in the surface of our planet, and then generate new rays, called infrared rays.

When these infrared rays try to go back into space, they get trapped in the atmosphere, and they come back down to earth again. That is NOT Good!

The reason the rays bounce back is because our atmosphere is filled with Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide. These  gases trap the rays inside the earth, making us hotter. This cycle is perfect. It keeps us at the perfect temperature to sustain life: 59°Fahrenheit.

But that was before humans were ever on this planet.

…do you remember Sensei how our Atmosphere on Club Penguin Island turned ORANGE with all this heat and particles from the man made Volcano?

…Sensei nodded and said Our Actions causes Reactions in the Environment!

…That is Right I said and We Penguins lives at The Arctic (Some Club Penguin Penguins do) and The Arctic is sending us perhaps the clearest message that climate change is occurring much more rapidly than scientists previously thought. In the summer of 2007, sea ice was roughly 39% below the summer average for 1979-2000, a loss of area equal to nearly five United Kingdoms. Many scientists now believe the Arctic will be completely ice free in the summertime between 2011 and 2015, some 80 years ahead of what scientists had predicted just a few years ago.

click to enlargeThe science is clear: global warming is happening faster than ever and humans are responsible. Global warming is caused by releasing what are called greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The most common greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide. Many of the activities we do every day like turn the lights on, cook food, or heat or cool our homes rely on energy sources like coal and oil that emit carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases. This is a major problem because global warming destabilizes the delicate balance that makes life on this planet possible. Just a few degrees in temperature can completely change the world as we know it, and threaten the lives of millions of people around the world. When the Earth get warmer we get Flooding and Storms!

But don't give up hope! You can Help stop Global Warming by taking Action :)

Easy Things You Can Do To Help Our Climate:
  1. TIP: Travel light. Walk or bike instead of driving a car. Cars and trucks run on fossil fuels, which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Walk or bike and you'll save one pound of carbon for every mile you travel.
  2. TIP: Teleconference instead of flying. For office meetings, if you can telephone or videoconference, you will save time, money, and carbon emissions. Airplanes pump carbon emissions high into the atmosphere, producing 12 percent of transportation sector emissions.
  3. TIP: See the light. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. These energy-efficient bulbs help fight climate change because they reduce the amount of fossil fuels that utilities burn. You will save 100 pounds of carbon for each incandescent bulb that you replace with a compact fluorescent, over the life of the bulb.
  4. TIP: Recycle and use recycled products. Products made from recycled paper, glass, metal and plastic reduce carbon emissions because they use less energy to manufacture than products made from completely new materials. For instance, you'll save two pounds of carbon for every 20 glass bottles that you recycle. Recycling paper also saves trees and lets them continue to reduce climate change naturally as they remain in the forest, where they remove carbon from the atmosphere.
  5. TIP: Inflate your tires. If you own a car, it will get better gas mileage when the tires are fully inflated, so it will burn less gas and emit less carbon. Check your automobile monthly to ensure that the tires are fully inflated. Follow this tip and save 300 pounds of carbon dioxide for every 10,000 miles you drive.
  6. TIP: Plant native trees. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and use it as their energy source, producing oxygen for us to breathe. A tree in the temperate zone found between the tropics and the polar circles can remove and store 700 to 7,000 pounds of carbon over its lifetime. A tree that shades a house can reduce the energy required to run the air conditioner and save an additional 200 to 2,000 pounds of carbon over its lifetime.
  7. TIP: Turn down the heat. Heating and air conditioning draw more than half of the energy that a home uses in the United States. Turn down the heat or air conditioning when you leave the house or go to bed. You can easily install a programmable thermostat that can save up money and carbon.
  8. TIP: Buy renewable energy. A growing number of utilities generate electricity from renewable energy sources with solar panels, windmills and other technologies. If your utility offers renewable energy, buy it. If not, send them a message asking for clean energy.
  9. TIP: Act globally, eat locally. If you shop at a supermarket, the food you buy may travel in a plane from the other side of the world, burning fossil fuels the entire trip. Shop at a local farmers markets and you will find fresh and healthy food, and help save our climate.

…Sensei Bowed and said I will Thank Grasshopper Saraapril you have give me many things to think about and to correct…Today the young Student Teach Sensei…Sensei Vanish!

...Bye Sensei Thanks for Listening :) Now I will Waddle home to my Igloo and change my Light bulbs and plant a Tree in my Garden :)

Climate Change A STORM is Coming to Club Penguin Island!

Me and Uncle Gary have done Research TOGETHER and In Today's Club Penguin News you can Read the Alarming things we found out:

After weeks of mystery and rumors, at least one of the effects of the Volcano’s awakening is becoming obvious in the sky.

Gary the Gadget Guy reported this week that the Volcano may have a significant impact on the weather.

“After careful research I have concluded that the heat and smoke rising from the Volcano is gathering in the atmosphere – the sky, I mean. This can often lead to severe weather patterns… including lightning storms.” We asked Gary if a storm was likely, and when it might hit the island.

“I calculate the odds are around 99"% that a storm will hit around the end of the month… maybe even in time for Halloween.”

Making Stuff by Screenhog :)

This is a Message from Screenhog:

Hi everyone - It's Screenhog!
There's a lot of Halloween spookiness going on around the island. The Halloween Igloo Contest is starting on Friday along with a new furniture catalog, and the team's even been putting together more costumes for later this month. And speaking of costumes, we wanted to show you a little secret about something we do when we design clothing for penguins.
Remember the You Decide Poll with the rough art of the Gnome costume for the new November Stage? We got quite a few people asking why the penguins are always grey in these pictures. Some of you even asked if it's a new penguin color that's coming out!
It's not a new penguin color... but we do put the clothes on grey penguins for a reason. Grey is neutral - which means it doesn't look strange next to a different color. If we were to use a yellow or dark blue penguin all the time when we designed clothes, we might end up making a lot of clothing items that look really good on yellow or dark blue penguins, but nothing else! Using a grey penguin gives us the best chance of creating clothing items with colors that work on all penguins.
What do you think? If you've got any secrets of your own for putting together costumes or decorating a spooky igloo, leave them in the comments.
Waddle on!
