Aunt Arctic Asks: What is the Purpose of an Earth Day in Club Penguin and can you tell us how you hope this will effect The Offline Real World?

Billybob Answers:

"Our players constantly ask for ways they can improve the virtual world of Club Penguin and the world at large, and we like to encourage that spirit of global citizenship and giving back," says Lane Merrifield, co-founder of Club Penguin and executive vice president of Disney Online Studios. "Children today are far more environmentally aware than ever before and they truly want to make a difference. It’s important that their experiences on Club Penguin reflect and reinforce those ideals."

The Earth Day party will allow the kids who play Club Penguin to work together to make good things happen in the online community, and will include the launch of a permanent recycling depot and community garden, which players will be responsible for maintaining. In addition, players will have the opportunity to help plant and nurture a community tree, which will become a permanent fixture on the virtual island’s snow-covered landscape. In an effort to further promote sustainability and encourage environmentally friendly behavior, Club Penguin will also offer suggestions on things kids can do in the real world.

"We hope by taking an active role in caring for the virtual environment of Club Penguin, where their penguin avatars live, work and play, the kids will realize they have an important role to play, and they’ll take those lessons into their home communities and find ways to make a positive difference in the real world," says Lane Merrifield aka Billybob :)

Planning Your Meal:
* Make sure your parent or guardian helps you with these!

  1. Decide who you are inviting to your earth-friendly meal. Consider friends, family, neighbors.
  2. Pick the food categories you are going to include at your meal. Have as many or as few as you want!
  3. Get organized. Make a list of who will be in charge of what category.
Hint: if there is someone who can’t be in charge of a meal item, give them a different activity.
  4. Set a date, time, and location. Invite! Be sure all your guests know what they should bring.
  5. Let your guests know what the theme is. During the meal, have each person explain how their food item is earth-friendly!
Hint: Try to think of other ways to make your meal

Earth-Friendly Meal :) more earth-friendly, like using reusable dishes!

Arts & Crafts! Construction Helmet :)

Construction Helmet :)

You Will Need

A balloon
Old newspaper or magazine
1 cup flour
1 cup water
A pin or tack
Paint or markers

* Optional: “Found” objects

How It’s Done
* Make sure your parent or guardian helps you with these!

In Club Penguin, penguins sometimes use construction helmets (and other tools like jackhammers) to make things. Create your own “green” construction helmet out of old newspaper.

  1. Blow up the balloon until it’s roughly the same size as your head.
  2. Mix the flour and the water in a bowl until the mixture gets sticky like glue.
  3. Tear the newspaper/magazine into small strips.
  4. A few pieces at a time, dip the newspaper into the mixture and then stick the pieces onto the balloon. (Note: only cover the top half of the balloon so it’s shaped like a helmet.)
  5. Leave the balloon overnight, or until it’s completely dry.
  6. Ask a parent or guardian to help you burst the balloon with a tack, or pin.
  7. Paint or color it!

* Optional: If you want, decorate your helmet with things you can find around the house.

Now you’re ready to build new things – the Club Penguin way!Construction Helmet :)
